    A textbook for beginning readers, it first appeared about 1690 and was used in the schools of all the colonies. Since the reading matter was religious in nature it was also read in the churches. This small, 88-page book was used for almost a century and a half. It has been said of it that "it taught millions to read, and not one to sin."
