    Негритянский общественный деятель, профсоюзный лидер. Выдвинулся как социалист в период первой мировой войны. В 1925 создал Братство проводников спальных вагонов [Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters] для защиты интересов негритянских железнодорожников, которое сыграло решающую роль в образовании в 1941 Комиссии по справедливым условиям найма [ Fair Employment Practices Committee]. В 1957 стал вице-президентом АФТ-КПП [ AFL-CIO], в 1960 создал Негритянский американский рабочий совет [Negro American Labor Council] в качестве отделения АФТ-КПП. В 1963 возглавил поход 200 тыс. рабочих-негров на г. Вашингтон [ Marches on Washington] - крупнейший в США марш протеста против безработицы и дискриминации [March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom].
