В 1976 принял мусульманское имя Имаму Амири Барака [Imamu Amiri Baraka]. В период подъема движения против расовой дискриминации 60-х гг. выдвинулся как его активист, выступая в защиту искусства негров [black art]. В сборнике эссе "Дома" ["Home, Social Essays"] (1966) декларировал приверженность насилию, разрыв с "мачехой-Америкой", полемизировал с интеграционистами (Л. Хьюзом [ Hughes, Langston], Дж. Болдуином [ Baldwin, James], Р. Эллисоном [ Ellison, Ralph Waldo] и др.). Джонс отводит литературе утилитарные функции, в программном стихотворении "Черное искусство" ["Black Art"] призывает создавать "стихи-убийцы". Излюбленная тема драматургии - невозможность расового примирения (драма "Туалет" ["The Toilet"] (1964), пьеса "Голландец" ["Dutchman"], по которой сделана лучшая внебродвейская [ Off-Broadway] постановка 1964). Стремясь к художественной самобытности, автор нередко соединяет сценическое действие с музыкой в "историческом карнавале" - драма "Корабль невольников" ["Slave Ship"] (1970). Поэзия Джонса - хаотический поток впечатлений, эмоций, образов (сборники "Саботаж" ["Sabotage"] (1963), "Изучая цель" ["Target Study"] (1965) и др.). Автор ряда публицистических книг о джазе и блюзе
